Julius Reichelt (1637-1719) was a professor of mathematics at Strassburg. He was also a renowned numismatist. In his research on and survey of ancient and contemporary amulets, he applied principles of astrology and Kabbalah, coming to the conclusion that “there was no natural cause in amulets, and that they were therefore superstitious snares of the devil” (Thorndike). The amulets illustrated on the woodcut plates have been described, Reichelt’s conclusions not withstanding, as being among the most striking ever to appear in a book. They are inscribed with a wide array of Kabbalistic devices, many utilizing the various Hebrew names for God.
