Description

Profusely illustrated tri-lingual English-Yiddish-Hebrew album chronicling the joys and sorrows of life in the land of Israel. The full title is War and Peace in Palestine: Memorial Volume. From the first days of Zionism to the present time, with special consideration of recent events. A collection of pictures with comments and explanations. Pages 9 through 159 are photographs with bi-lingual captions followed by Hebrew explanations. The book reads from right to left but the remainder of the textual part, with separate sections, is from left to right in English and Yiddish. The book is divided into sections entitled From Dreams to reality; Facing reality; Jerusalem, Temple area, Wailing wall with subheadings for ten other cities in Erez Israel; inquiries, commissions; Varia; Additions; to the reader; and explanations. The first sections are entirely made up of photographs of individuals, places, and scenes. This is an unusually rich and evocative portrait of Israel in the decades prior to World War II and the founding of the state of Israel, showing the faces of the people, their lives, the land that they were building, and in many cases the unfortunate results of Arab hostility, as in the pogrom in Hebron.
