"Ostjuden are Jews from Russia and Russian Poland who moved to Germany during the closing decades of the nineteenth century, and mostly involuntarily, during World War I and aroused in the postwar era public controversy and rabid antisemitism quite disproportionate to their relatively small number." " The Ostjuden had originally fled Czarist Russia to escape persecution, poor economic conditions and military conscription." |
