Mr. R. W. Hamilton, Chief Inspector in the Department of Antiquities, was appointed Director of Antiquities in 1938. This announcement shows the goals of the department and the means by which it intends to meet its goals. These goals included: to develop investigation of the past , to allow residents and visitors the chance to view and learn from then and to worry that these remnants of the past will remain for future generations.
Mr. Hamilton proposes to meet these goals by using the help of the public, and to give the goals a legal context. Therefore, a definition of the term " antiquities"was provided, who is entitled legally to own an antiquity, revealing of antiquities (as it always the government's right first to acquire those antiquities found in the land).
Mr. Hamilton then proceeds to list the duties of the public: 1) to leave antiquities where they are found and to guard them; 2) to immediately notify the Department of Antiquities; 3) stop all work in the area so as not to disturb the historical background of the findings. |
