Detailed
Description
Judeo-Arabic-Hebrew versified prayer based on the akedah (binding of Isaac, Genesis 22:1-19). The Hebrew text is in the right hand column, the Judeo-Arabic text in the left hand column. Below the latter is an illustration of three young men in modern clothing. The Hebrew portion is comprised of fourteen stanzas, all but the first stanza made up of three lines. Except for the last stanza each stanza concludes with the refrain aked. It describes the akedah, closely following the narrative of the biblical account. An example of the text is the next to last stanza, which says, He said to Abraham, the Lord of Heaven, do not end your hand to the three lights, return in peace, angels Mahaniam. This is a day of merit for the children of Jerusalem,, the sins of the children of Jacob I forgive, Aked. It concludes, and say to Zion the time of salvation has come, Yanun and Elia I will send. The poem is chanted to an impressive melody in Sephardi communities before the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Ha-Shanah (as well as on some other occasions in various rites). It is distinguished by its elegiac qualities, rare in Hebrew poetry of that early date.

R. Judah b. Samuel ibn Abbas (d. c. 1170), liturgical poet was born in Fez and spent much of his life in Aleppo. About 20 of his piyyutim have been preserved.
