Detailed Description |
|
Kabbalistic homilies on the weekly Torah readings by R. Judah ben Mordecai Berdiuo of Tiberius (c. 1690-1744). The text is accompanied by Gali Amikta by R. Jacob Berdugo, and was arranged and published by R. Jacob Hay Berdugo, Sephardi Tahor, also of Tiberius. The title is from “The words of a man’s mouth are like deep waters (mayyim amukim), and the fountain of wisdom like a flowing brook (Proverbs 18:4). There is an introduction from R. Jacob Berdugo and his son R. Raphael David Berdugo which states that this work is pleasant in appearance and “desirable to the eyes” (Genesis 3:5). “His mouth is most sweet; and he is altogether lovely” (Song of Songs 5:16). The author called it Mayyim Amukim because it is on the Torah. Written in “a clear language” (Zephaniah 3:9) with brevity. After the introductory material is a reproduction of the synagogue by the grave of R. Meir Ba’al ha-Nes. There is a testimony on the Berdugo’s family lineage from R. Moses Pardo, claiming it stems from King David through Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel. The family is from Castile and includes R. Moses Alshich and currently is in Tiberius. The text of Mayyim Amukim is in square letters at the top of the page. Below it, in rabbinic letters is Gali Amikta. |
