Detailed Description |
|
Bi-lingual Hebrew-English responsum by R. Samuel Aaron Halevi Pardes on the subject of – “Junket” Rennet Products. The text is in parts, reading from right to left the Hebrew original and from left to right the English translation. The subject is the kashrut of Junket products, that is, Rennet powder, used to make Rennet-Custards; Rennet-Tablets, used in making Rennet-Custards and ice-cream; and Rennet Mix used in making ice cream. It is noted that the hechsher for these Junket products was originally approved by prominent rabis in Europe, as well as the late Grand rabbi, R. Judah Leib Graubert of Toronto and by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada. Rabbi Pardes begins by noting that the source of the powder is from the stomach lining of cattle not slaughtered in accordance with Jewish law. In response to the question whether such powder is kosher he responds that, having given it deep thought he concludes that the powder is kosher beyond any possibility of doubt. He then goes on to explain his reasons for that conclusion. Also included are brief supporting comments from R. Judah Leib Zelzer and R. Judah Leib Graubert. The responsa was highly controversial and elicited much opposition.
