Detailed
Description
Two rare works by Hungarian rabbis. The first work, Avodat Kehunah is a klabbalistic work with several illustrations. Both the text and the illustrations deal with the service of and the Kohens’s blessings during that service. The title page, which also has the kohen’s spread hands on states that it is taken from a manuscript found, copied and brought to press by R. Moses Panet and that the author’s name will be given at the end of the text. The last name in the book is that of R. Menahem Mendel Panet but it is not in the context of author of the actual work. In addition to several illustration of the Kohen’s spread hands with inscriptions on the fingers and hand related to the Sefirot and other kabbalistic interpretations. There is also an illustration of the menorah with comparable inscriptions. The second work does not have a title page but has the heading Kol Bokhim. The first paragraph refers to R. Ezekiel Panet.

R. Ezekiel Panet was a Hungarian rabbi; born 1783 at Bielitz, Silesia; died Nisan 20, 1845, at Karlsburg, Transylvania. He studied in the yeshibah of Leipnik, Moravia, under Rabbi Baruch Fränkel, and then went to Prague, where Chief Rabbi Samuel Landau and the assistant rabbi Eleazar Fleckeles were his teachers. After his marriage in 1802 he spent five years at Linsk in Talmudic studies and then joined the ranks of the Polish Ḥasidim, with whom he maintained close relations throughout his life. He was successively rabbi at Ostrik (1807-13) and Tarczal, Hungary (1813-23), and was chief rabbi of Karlsburg from 1823 to 1845. His principal literary work is "Sefer She'elot u-Teshubot me-Rab Yehezkel we-Sha'are Ziyyon," ed. R. M. M. Panet, Marmaros-Sziget, 1875. Most of his works are extant in manuscript and contain notes on the Talmud. R. Panet’s son R. Menahem Mendel Panet was the author of several manuscript novellæ on the Talmud, besides responsa collections entitled "Sha'are Zedeḳ," "Abne Zedeḳ," and "Mishpat Zedeḳ") and his grandson R. Moses Panet, was successor to his father as rabbi of Dej.
