Dr. Benisch had established a periodical called the Hebrew Observer, which was "subsequently embodied with the third series of the Jewish Chronicle. He proposed rendering the new organ self-supporting, and at the same time he did not desire to espouse the opinions of any particular class or section of the community. He advocated a broad Judaism, moderate progress with the age, the spread of education, the study of Hebrew literature and conciliatory views on religious questions. He aimed at rendering the Hebrew Observer the medium for intercommunication between the Jews of the different parts of the British Empire and, when practicable, the connecting link between them and their continental brethren.
