Detailed
Description
Profusely illustrated retelling of the biblical stories in Genesis by Elhanan B. Joseph Indeiman. There is a front piece with a depiction of a globe surrounded by flames with, on the top, a man holding a Sefer Torah. About it the verse "Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in" (Isaiah 26:2). Next is a page with a short form for a student to enter his name, his teacher's name, class and school, followed by the title page which gives the compiler's name as Elhanan Indeiman and an associate name of Levi Wiener. Sippurei Toratenu is comprised of a retelling of the biblical stories in vocalized Hebrew with marginal translations into more modem Hebrew and footnotes that explain or direct the student elsewhere in the book, for example to see an additional illustration. A majority of pages have accompanying pictures related to the text and there are decorative headers for the beginning of chapters. In some instance the illustrations are full page. For example, the chapter on the flood has the heading ha-mabul and with a page length drawing of clouds raining over waves covering trees. Below it is the header Noah builds an ark. The facing page has a large depiction of an ark with birds flying over it. The next pages have two additional small illustrations of the are, the first sailing through rain and stormy waves, the next with the dove with an olive leaf in its mout flying over the ark. A third small picture depicts Noah and his family by the rainbow and the ark in the distance. Similar illustrations accompany other biblical stories. At the end is a table of contents and three pages of illustrations. The illustrations are by Y. Tumovitsky. Elhanan B. Joseph Indeiman (d. 1913-83) was born in Zuromin, Poland and died in New York.
