Description

A reference work alphabetically listing proper nouns naming persons or places and where they appear by tractate by R. Simon ben Judah Löb Peiser. R. Peiser, who served in Liss was born at Peisern, Poland, about 1690. Nahalat Shimoni is in two parts. The second part is bound first, followed by the first part. The title page of part II, printed in Wandsbeck by Israel ben Abraham, a proselyte, one who reputedly had previously been a priest, is dated from the verse, “Esther put on her royal dress (Esther 5:1). It has an architectural border and at the top a crest with a point rising from the top. Within the crest is an upright lion facing inward towards a tower; a star is above the lion and the tower. The lion is on the viewer’s left, the tower on the right. This is the pressmark of the famed Amsterdam printer Immanuel Benveniste, except that the position of the lion and the tower are here reversed. The Benveniste device was used by other printers in both Amsterdam and elsewhere. Part one, gives the place of printing as Hamburg by Christian Johann Rose. (Wandsbeck, Hamburg, and Altona were three joined communities). It has an architectural frame with a crown at the top. This title page does not have a date. It has several approbations and the author’s introduction.

Nahalat Shimoni is comprised of four sections: (1) onomasticon (lisiting of the names) of the Bible, quoting all haggadot which are found in the Babylonian Talmud, the Midrash Rabbah, and the five Megillot, and which concern Biblical persons; with marginal notes, "'En Rogel," which give all parallel passages; (2) onomasticon of all the teachers of the Mishnah in the Babylonian Talmud; (3, 4) onomasticon of the teachers of the baraitot and the Amoraim. The first two sections were published at Wandsbeck (Hamburg) in 1728; sections 3 and 4, as well as his Talmudic methodology, are as yet unpublished.
