Description		    Anti-Christian satire attributed to R. Jonah Rapa (c. 380). This work was sufficiently rare and unknown so that the entry on satire in the Jewish Encyclopedia refers to it as being known “only to students . . . The "Haggadah" of Jonah Rapa (c. 1380), still in manuscript, is a vehement denunciation of the licentiousness indulged in by Gentiles during the carnival.” The book opens with a reproduction of the title page of the Montefiore manuscript (no. 454), followed by the title page of this volume, which informs that it was brought to press by Gershon ben Joseph Biloski, a dedication to R. Michael Friedlander, and an English introduction. That introduction describes the book as the perhaps most elaborate which Hebrew literature contains. It states that the original subject of the book was the Passover Haggadah, changed into a description of the carnival revels, the Lenten ceremonies and processions of Italian cities. In this satire the original words of the Haggadah are largely retained. Biloski writes that parodies throw light on the development and decline of belief and custom, putting into fitting language the thoughts of thousands of quiet, thoughtful men. He suggests that R. Rapa lived at Vercelli or at Casale and was the author of other satires. He also states that he neither approves or accepts the author’s statements and even disassociates himself from them, presenting the parody as a literary and historic document.

Among the subjects addressed in Zeman Zemanim Zemanehem is concerned with Christian ceremonies, Carnival, Lent, belief in the Madonna, a monkish quarrel in Madrid, saints, orders of knighthood, and the Jesuits in China. The text is set in Hebrew in square letters in a single column.
