Description
Extracts from Sefer Hasidim by Abraham Sulzbach (1838–1925), educator and scholar. Sulzbach, born in Hamburg, studied rabbinics with the local chief rabbi (A. Stern), S. B. Bamberger in Wuerzburg, and M. Landsberg in Berlin, where he also attended university. From 1862 to 1912 he taught general and Jewish subjects at the high school (Realschule) which S. R. Hirsch had established in Frankfort. Among his published works are: Renan und der Judaismus (1867); Die religioese und weltliche Poesie der Juden (7th–16th centuries; in Winter-Wuensche, Die juedische Literatur, vol. 3); Dichterklaenge aus Spaniens besseren Tagen (1873, 1903); Bilder aus der juedischen Vergangenheit (1914, 1923); Die Ethik des Judentums (extracts from Sefer Hasidim, 1923); and he edited an anonymous commentary on Job (1911). Sulzbach also translated the Targum Sheni of Esther (1920) into German and edited some liturgical texts with translation, such as Esther and the Purim service (19064); Koheleth Schelomo (1908); and Sefer ha-Hayyim (1930).
