Rabbi Guterman, served for 57 years as chief orthodox rabbi of the city and conducted, until six months before his passing a daily lecture on the Talmud at the Hebrew Orthodox Center in Scranton. A renowned Talmudic scholar, he was known to study 15 hours a day or more, was a consultant on Jewish law to the chief rabbinate at Jerusalem.

Rabbi Guterman was very active in the community on behalf of Jewish affairs and was the founder of Scranton's Hebrew Day School and the Young Men's Hebrew Association.
