Only edition of this descriptive index work on the rules and sources of the halakhic authorities by R. Mosheh Avigdor ben Israel Shraga Haiken. There is an introduction, followed by a dedication to R. Haiken’s wife, Tanna Rivka, daughter of R. Solomon Zalman Pinsker, av bet din Harsan. The text is arranged alphabetically, set in two columns in square letter. Entries are numbered sequentially, beginning anew with each letter. There ae, for example, eighteen entries for alef, five for bet, four for gimel, four for daled, thirty-one for heh. After each letter is a listing of source references in the Shulhan Arukh for each entry in that letter.
R. Mosheh Avigdor ben Israel Shraga Haiken (1852-1928) was born at Sklow, government of Mohilev, in 1852, and removed at an early age with his father to St. Petersburg, where the latter became chief shohet. This R. Haiken was educated for the rabbinate, and obtained several rabbinical diplomas, among others one from Rabbi Spektor of Kovno. After the riots of 1881-82 he emigrated to Paris, where he served as rabbi of the Polish Jews from 1883 to 1887; but then returned to Russia and was rabbi at Rostov-on-the-Don from 1888 to 1889. Being expelled from Russia in 1890, he went to England, and in 1892 was appointed rabbi of Sheffield, England, and in 1901 of the Federation of Synagogues, London. He also served as Rav of Agudat Batei Kenesset in London. His works include Tsion Rashi (London, 1921) and Mafteah ha-Inyanim me-Arba Helke Shulhan Arukh (reprint, Jerusalem, 1960) as well as Apologie des Juifs (Paris, 1887) and Celebrities of the Jews (Sheffield, 1889). In 1926, R. Haiken made aliyah to Erez Israel.
