Description
Prospectus for a folio of three hundred original photographs of Palestine Transjordan and Syria by S. J. Schweig of Jerusalem. Schweig is described on the title page as a member of the Royal Photographic Society, London. There is, the published work, a foreword by Sir Herbert Samuel, G. C. B. M. P.; an introduction by Dr. Hans Kohn. The work is published under the auspicies of Lady Herbert Samuel; Viscountess Erleigh; Mrs. B. Dugdale; Mrs, H. Irwell; The Rt. Hon. Lord Melchett, P. C. LL.d.; The Rt. Hon. Sir Herbert Samuel, G C. B., M. P.; Sir Frederic G. Kenyon, G. B. E.; and Viscount Erleigh, K. C. Three sample text pages from the book follow, the initial letter of the each page historiated, the first in red over a prancing deer with clusters of grapes. That page begins “The history of few countries in the world is a familiar to a great part of mankind as that of the Holy Land. The names of its Kings and Prophets in far off ancient days, are well known to us from our early childhood.” Next is a photograph of the ruins of Ballbeck, a photograph of the binding, described as being Brown morocco binding, such as is used in the most beautiful hand-bound books. Each volume has gold silk headbands, top and bottom. Each volume also has silk front pages. There is a page listing the conditions of sale and purchase, giving the price of the six volumes in the set as fifty pounds. The prospectus concludes with an order form and a bankers form.
