Detailed
Description
Stories for Jewish children, translated by Joseph Leftwich, and with illustrations by Sigismund Freyhan. The stories were first published in German in 1908 and reprinted in 1921. The stories also appeared in Hebrew, Hungarian and Yiddish. The author, Hermann Schwab (1879–1962), was a German journalist and historical writer. In his native Frankfort Schwab early came under the influence of S. R. Hirsch. He was employed for many years in the Hirsch metal enterprises near Berlin, and in Halberstadt. From 1927 he ran a press service in Berlin which he continued after emigrating to England in 1934. A supporter of Agudat Israel and its founder, Jacob Rosenheim, Schwab during World War I organized its war orphans' fund, which established a number of orphanages in Poland. In London, he became president of the Golders Green Beth Hamidrash.

His main published works are: Kindertraeume (1911; Dreams of Childhood, 1945); Aus der Schuetzenstrasse (1923; Memories of Frankfort, 1955); A World in Ruins. History, Life and Work of German Jewry (1946); History of Orthodox Jewry in Germany (1950); Jewish Rural Communities in Germany (1956); and Chachme Ashkenaz (Eng., 1964).
