Detailed
Description
Autograph letter written by R. Solomon ben Abraham Sofer on behalf of the yeshiva Torat Hayyim in Jerusalem. Letters were also written and/or signed by many leading rabbis in Hungary, among them R. Samuel Moleiner, R. Jacob Broda, R. Zion ben Pinhas ha-Kohen Bochner. R. Sofer was in Jerusalem at the time that he wrote this letter. In the letter he informs that he has visited the yeshiva and that there approximately thirty students, among them outstanding Torah scholars, albeit of tender years. He tested them and was pleased. It is therefore a great mitzvah to strengthen and support the yeshiva. R. Solomon ben Abraham Sofer (1853–1930) was the son of R. Abraham Wolf (Ketav Sofer, 1815-71), a distinguished preacher and writer. He is the author of Hut ha-Meshullash (1887), biographies of his family, the Sofers and the Egers. He served as rabbi of Beregszasz until his death.
