Detailed
Description
Unusual and innovative versified recording of events in world and Jewish history by R. Zevi Hirsch ben Simeon Somerhausen. The introductory paragraph states that it is intended to remember events from “days of old” (Isaiah 23:7, 37:26, Micah 7:20, Job 1:7, 2). Song for every generation in couplets, open and closed. The first letter indicates the number in thousands, the sum of the letters indicated by asterisks the centuries, decades and years all since the creation of the world. For example, under alef, header states 1,656 the flood years from the creation (in R. Somerhausen’s time). The first line in the couplet is “the flood was on the earth, ‘for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth’” (Genesis 6:12). The second line is “à one man remained ðåúøwith his family ‘Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations’” (cf. Genesis 6:9), the laef standing for a thousand and remained ðåúø(656) giving the sum of the years. There are twenty-eight entries, each in the same format, concluding with the Sanhedrin in Paris in 5,566 (1806). The date is given at the end with the verse “Remember the days of old” (Deuteronomy 32:7). R. Zevi Hirsch Somerhausen (1781-1853) was, in addition to Da’at Dorot, the author of a much reprinted Haggadah le-lyl Shecorim
