Detailed
Description
Commentary on Ecclesiastes and Psalms by R. Moses Israel de Mercado. Mercado (d. 1652), who died at an early age, was a member of the distinguished Portuguese-Amsterdam Mercado family, and a student of R. Saul Levi Morteira (c. 1596-1660), hakham of the Beit Ya’akov community and author of Givat Sha’ul (Amsterdam, 1645). The title page of Perush Sefer Kohelet ve-Tehillim, which was published posthumously by Mercado’s uncle R. Jacob Mercado, has the full page Benveniste frame comprised of oval and bullet shaped segments with the lion facing a tower escutcheon. The text informst that Perush Sefer Kohelet ve-Tehillim was “found concealed and sealed in his (de Mercado’s) library as a manuscript and brought to press after his death by his uncle R. Jacob Mercado in order that “his lips move in the grave” (Yevamot 97a, Sanhedrin 90b, Bekhorot 31b). Edited with great care by R. Jacob Sasportas . . .”

The title page is followed by Morteira’s introduction. It begins with the heading “I will sing of loving kindness (hesed) and justice (mishpot); to you, O Lord, I will sing” (Psalms 101:1); it is comprised of eight paragraphs, of which the first four begin with mishpot and the next four with hesed, allusions and references to his deceased student. Next are verse in honor of Mercado by R. Samuel de Caceres and R. Samuel Valverde, the former in two columns, in which the initial letter of each word in the first column spells for Moses de Mercado and in the second the author’s name. There is an introduction by Sasportas (c. 1610–1698, Toledot Ya’akov, Amsterdam, 1652, see above), which begins with the heading “I said of laughter (leshok), It is mad; and of mirth, What does it achieve” (Ecclesiastes 2:2). The first five paragraphs beginning with a form of sehok and concluding with martia, a versified eulogy printed previously as Aleh Divrei ha-Hakham (Amsterdam, 1652). Next is the text of Perush Sefer Kohelet ve-Tehillim, the biblical passages in the center of the page in vocalized Hebrew, accompanied by Mercado’s commentary in the margins in rabbinic letters. The initial word of Ecclesiastes is enlarged and centered but otherwise unadorned, in contrast to the initial word of Psalms which is set in a decorative border. In his commentary Mercado, writing in a clear style, emphasizes and explains the literal meaning of verses.
