Detailed
Description
First edition of the Hebrew weekly Houmoh, published by the Shem-Veeber Pub. Ass'n and edited by Aaron Frankel. Established as a weekly, it appeared more often as a bi-weekly. Volume 1 no. 1 was published on July 30, 1915. Each issue is enclosed in a yellow wrapper. The viewpoint of Houmoh was Zionist and literary. The president was A. H. Rosenberg, A. Frankel was the vice-pres. And treasurer, and S. Seligson was the secretary. Its address was 130 Henry street. The first issues were generally twelve pages long, but the later issues are sixteen pages. The first issue had articles on contemporary issues the war, verse and the condition of the Jewish people. In addition to the officers of the journal a number of other contributors wrote for the paper, among them Joshua Barzilai, Aaron Tabak, Rav Zakain, and a Goldberg. Later issues followed the same format, and included stories, articles on the Prophets, and responsa. An additional feature is the advertisements, giving a taste of life on the lower east side of New York at the time. This is an almost complete run for 1915. the last issue is dated December 17, 1915. It may well be the last issue of Houmoh to appear.
