Detailed
Description
Versified eulogy in poster format for R. David Israel Athias. R. Athias, whose name is given here as R. Israel Athias, was the Hakham of the Portuguese community at Amsterdam from 1728 till his death March 22, 1753. There is an opening prose paragraph which begins that it is a day of indignation and transgression, “anguish as of her who brings forth her first child” (Jeremiah 5:31), a day in which the sun is lacking the splendor of its light, a day in which the crown of the Torah is fallen, a day in which the brilliance and glory of Israel is in exile, in which tears flow as water to the earth, on the death of a Torah scholar, the complete sage R. Israel Athias. The body of the sheet is comprised of nine quatrains, well and movingly written, mourning R. Athias. The eulogy was delivered by R.Athias’ son-in-law, R. ibn Dano de Brito. Also menmtioned among the hespedim is R. Abraham Ezekiel, av bet din, Hamburg.
