Description		    Commentary and discourse on the Pesah Haggadah by on of the leading sages of Salonika, R. Joseph ben David ibn Shabbatai. The title page has an ornamental frame and states that it is a commentary on the rav ha-Maggid by R. Joseph David. It is dated with the verse “eat bread, and let your heart be merry” (I Kings 21:7). The emphasized letters, however, only equal 99, letters for the sum 400, needed to complete the date (499 = 1739) not having been emphasized. Nevertheless, based on the introduction and the dates of the Sultan mentioned on the title page it is clear that 1739 is the intended date. The title page is followed an introduction entitled Sha’ar ha-Panim from R. Joseph ibn Adrot. Next is the commentary on the Haggadah and, from 18a, the discourse, all in a single column in rabbinic type.

R. Joseph ben David ibn Shabbatai of Salonika (1660-1737) av bet din, is best known for his Bet David, a commentary on all four parts of the Turim. He also wrote Bet Avot on Pirkei Avot and on Hoshannas; Zemah David, homilies on the weekly Torah readings; Yemai David, discourses on festivals; Yikra Diskivi 129 eulogies and novellae; and Bet David responsa on all four parts of the Turim. Among his students were such leading rabbis as R. Solomon Amarillo (Kerem Shelomo), R. Abraham Gatino (Yad Moshe); R. Hannania Saul (Magen Sha’ul); R. Isaac ha-Levi (Ba’er Mayim Hayyim); R. Hanun David (Benei Yitzhak); R. Eleazar Nahmias (Hon David); and R. Raphael ibn Hason (Hayai Avraham).

דף [2]: שער הפנים, הקדמה מאת ר' יוסף הכהן ן' ארדוט. בשער הפרט: בשנת אכול' ל'חם וייט'ב ל'בך [צ"ט]. הכוונה היא לשנת תצ"ט, שבהקדמת ר' יוסף ן' ארדוט הוא מזכיר את ספרו של המחבר בית דוד על סדר ארבעה טורים "וכונתינו רצויה להעלות אותו תחלה [לשאר כתבי המחבר] על מזבח הדפוס ממחרת הפסח". ואכן בית דוד נדפס בשנת ת"ק-תק"ו. עיין: א' טויבר, מחקרים ביבליוגרפיים, ירושלים תרצ"ב, עמ' 64-63, שאף הוא קובע את השנה תצ"ט. השולטן מחמוד הנזכר בשער הוא מחמוד הראשון, שמלך בשנים 1754-1730. על שם המשפחה של המחבר עיין: מיכאל וילנסקי , הערות ביבליוגרפיות, קרית ספר, טו, תרצ"ח-תרצ"ט, עמ' 493-491.
