Description		    Second edition, first edition of Part III. [3], 2-74 ff., 8vo., 174:104 mm., light staining, few wormhole in few ff. A very good copy bound in modern full leather boards. Very rare second edition, issued just three years after the equally rare first edition.

Printed in Russia despite the Russian Czar's prohibition of 1794 on the printing of Hasidic and Kabbalah works. Several bibliographers contend that the Rubinstein press operated clandestinely and the printing of the censor's approval was for appearances only.

This edition was printed with several major revisions: the name of work was changed to Tanya from Likutei Amurim; Author's name was not printed; several passages relating to gentiles were eliminated; and new approbations were added. Part III is printed here for the first time.

Description		    R. Shnuer Zalman of Liady (1745–1813), the founder of Habad Hasidism was according to family traditions born in Liozna, Belorussia, on the 18th of Elul. After his marriage in 1760 he devoted himself to Torah study. Concluding that he knew "a little about learning, but nothing about prayer" in 1764 he decided to learn about Hasidism from R. Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezhirech, leader of the Hasidic movement. In Mezhirech he became one of the inner circle of the Maggid's pupils. Although he was one of the youngest pupils, the Maggid had a high opinion of him, and in 1770 delegated to him the task of composing a new and up-to-date Shulhan Arukh. R. Shnuer Zalman worked on this book for many years, but published only small parts of it. About one-third was printed posthumously (the rest had been destroyed by fire) and is known as the "Shulhan Arukh of the Rav" (1814). Though not a hasidic work, it represents—as the Maggid had intended—a great halakhic achievement. It evidences R. Shnuer Zalman's superb Hebrew style, his ability to provide lucid explanation, and profundity without complexity. It became an authoritative halakhic source among observant Jews.

בשער הובלטה התיבה "בסלאוויטא". בראשי העמודים: ליקוטי אמרים. דף נו,ב: "אני המסדר האותיות... אהרן מרדכי במ' אליהו מנחם מזאלקוי' ושמי הוא בראשי תיבות". מהקדמת המלקט נשמטה הפיסקה האחרונה. כך המצב בכל ההוצאות הבאות, עד שהוחזרה הפיסקה בהוצאת ווילנא תר"ס. חלק ג הוא מהדורא קמא של "אגרת התשובה" שיצאה בשקלאוו תקס"ו.
