R. Raphael ben Mordecai Berdugo (ha-malach, 1747–1821) was a member of the distinguished Meknes, Morocco Berdugo family, which, according to tradition, was of Davidic descent through the exilarch Bustanai. R. Raphael was a dayyan, as had been his father R. Mordecai (1715–1762) before him. He was greatly respected by his contemporaries, and his decisions, as well as his memory, remains a source of inspiration to Moroccan rabbis. In addition to Mei Menuhot, R. Raphael was the author of Mishpatim Yesharim, responsa (2 vols., 1891), Torot Emet, commentary on the Shulhan Arukh (1939); bound with the latter are Kizzur ha-Takkanot and Minhagei Terefot. Among his works still in manuscript are translations of the Bible from Genesis to the end of Isaiah into Arabic, under the title Leshon Limmudim. R. Raphael’s soul was called to the yeshiva shel ma’lah on the night of Hoshanah Rabba while engaged in learning Kabbalah.
