Only edition of this commentary on Pirkei Avot by R. Samson Hayyim ben Nahaman Raphael Nahmani. The title page, printed in red and black ink, states that it encompasses both revealed and esoteric interpretations, and that his words are “sweeter also than honey” (cf. Psalms 19:11). There is dedication in Latin to Giaco di Raffael Vita Sanguinetti di Modena, headed by a head-piece in red. Next is the author’s introduction and then an approbation from R. Menahem Azariah ben Judah Matzliah of Padua followed by the text. Each of these parts have head-pieces and there are also some tail-pieces as well as several historiated letters. The text of Toldot Shimshon is comprised of Avot in square unvocalized letters on the right and R. Nahmani’s detailed commentary in rabbinic letters on the left and about the text of the Mishnah. At the end of the volume are errata and an index.
Italian Talmudist; flourished about the latter half of the eighteenth century. He was the pupil of Ephraim Cohen of Ostrog, rabbi of Modena; of Abi'ad Sar-Shalom Basilla, rabbi of Mantua; and, in Cabala, of Benjamin Alexander ha-Kohen, rabbi of Reggio. He wrote "Toledot Shimshon," a commentary on Mishnah Abot (Leghorn, 1766), and "Zera' Shimshon," on the Pentateuch and the Five Megillot (Mantua, 1778).
