Detailed
Description
Herbert Sidebotham (1872–1940), journalist, until 1917 the Guardian's military correspondent. In 1917 he was lured away from the Guardian (then known as the Manchester Guardian) by the Times. With Harry Sacher he founded the British Palestine Society in Manchester, whose purpose was to establish a “community of ideals and interests between Zionism and British policy" and which published the weekly Palestine. It should be remembered that, during World War I, Chaim Weizmann was a reader (a British academic title equivalent to senior lecturer) at Manchester University and was supported in his campaign for Zionism by CP Scott, then editor of the Manchester Guardian.
