Description

First edition of this ethical work by R. Jehiel ben Jekuthiel ben Benjamin ha-Rofe Anav. Beit Middot is divided into twenty-four ma’alot (steps), of positive and negative middot (ethical values). The ma=alot are built on about 24,000 scriptural verses and rabbinic citations, from both the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, a wide range of midrashic sources, several no longer extant, as well works of ethics and philosophy, such as Gabirol=s Mivhar Peninim. On the verso of the title page and on the first page is an introduction and verse in praise of the book by R. Joseph ben Joel Bibas who brought the book to press and was the editor. The text is in rabbinic type in two columns. At the end of the Beit Middot is verse in praise of the book by R. Bibas followed by a listing of the twenty-four ma’a lot that make up the text. The colophon dates completion of the work to 4 Tishrei, 272 (Octobver 6, 1511). Written in a clear and lucid manner, Beit Middot was a popular work, testified to by the existence of almost 40 manuscripts copies. Beit Middot and often reprinted, under the title Ma’alot ha-Middot. It has been translated into Ladino twice and R. Jacob Emden incorporated complete chapters into his Migdal Oz (Altona, 1748).

R. Jehiel ben Jekuthiel ben Benjamin ha-Rofe Anav (c. 1300) a physician, copyist and paytan (liturgical poet), was a member of the distinguished Anav family. He is also credited with the halakhic digest Tanya Rabbati. Among his scribal works is the Leiden Jerusalem Talmud, the sole complete manuscript of that Talmud, copied by Jehiel in 1289. Jehiel was an accomplished scribe, with an attractive script, who worked rapidly, - orders Nashim and Nezikin, were completed by him in a month and twelve days - but who, as a result, made noticeable errors. R. Jehiel also wrote a kinah (dirge) on the burning of a synagogue in Trastevere, Rome in 1268, together with 21 Torah scrolls, and Hilkhot Shehitah, still in manuscript.
