Rare monograph on the halakhic status of autopsies on Jewish patients who died from lung cancer by Nehemiah Mosessohn, editor of the Jewish Tribune of Portland, Oregon. At the beginning is a letter by Mosessohn noting that he has written to many rabbis on this issue in the United States and Europe because it is a subject that effects the lives of Jews and he has requested a speedy response. The monograph begins that ten years ago a hospital was founded in Denver Colorado, to deal with an illness that afflicts many Jews קדחת הריאה (Pneumonia). At that time Pneumonia was not well understood and there was not specific treatments for it. The monograph continues that the doctors are Jewish and perform their duties with good intention. Nevertheless, their expertise not withstanding, many patients die and others are incurable and the doctors attempt to alleviate their pain. Medical science has not yet determined the nature of this illness and does not have a cure. Therefore, the doctors in this hospital follow the custom of other hospitals, to perform autopsies and to dissect the bodies in order to investigate and try to determine the nature of this sickness and to thereby eventually save the lives of other patients. In addressing the issue Mosessohn raises questions about the prohibition on tummah, mistreatment of the body, and disrespect for the dead.
