Detailed
Description
Attractive educational Hebrew textbook for English schoolchildren compiled by Jacob Dickson. The title page describes The New Children’s Primer as containing elements of Hebrew reading arranged in systematic and progressive exercises for the use of schools and private tuition; to which is added a selection of prayers and blessings with their English translation. The introduction begins that “The ìîãå äéèá äçãù as is well-known is the best Elementary Book for Hebrew Reading. Owning to the fact that it has hitherto been issued on the German system, the book was of little service to English children. I have therefore adapted it for English purposes and the New Edition is printed in large characters, specially designed for the purpose of the printer, and on superior paper, so that the text shall be clear and easily read.” The New Children’s Primer begins with the Hebrew alphabet in large letters with their English names below them, followed by vowels and several lessons of pronunciation. The next section of the book are prayers in Hebrew and English on facing pages, concluding with part III which is comprised of Ashrei, the beginning of the Amidah, and Kedushah. The New Children’s Primer appeal lies in its attractive layout, consisting of large Hebrew letters and accompanying English, as well as its choice of reading material, designed to instruct children in the basics of Jewish prayer.
