Detailed Description |
|
History of the Histadruth Ivrith of America with its constitution by Kalman Whiteman (1882 or 85-1946). He was born in Radomysl, Kiev Province, and received a traditional and Russian education. At the age of eighteen he left for Odessa, after which he worked as a Hebrew teacher in Kiev. Following military service, he worked in a modern heder in Odessa. He immigrated to America in 1906 and worked in the factories of Philadelphia and New York before becoming a teacher in the latter city in 1909. Whiteman, a pioneer of modern and secular Hebrew education, helped found the Histadruth Ivrith of America and was a member of Agudath Hamorim (Hebrew Teachers Union) and Hebrew societies. He authored a number of Hebrew textbooks and Yiddish books and contributed to the Hebrew and Yiddish press. Whiteman was affiliated with various Zionist factions during different stages of his life. He died in 1946.
