Detailed
Description
Biblical Jewish history written in a clear and lucid style for children by Julius Katzenberg. The title pages describe the work as Biblical History for school qand home, methodically arranged with appended moral lessons. It describes Katzenberg as author of “the Phonetic Hebrew Primer, Blossom and Fruit, Faith and Deeds, etc.” These contents of these volumes are III, From the Death of Moses to the Last Judges; IV, Saul, David, and Solomon; V The Divided Kingdom. Both Hebrew and solar dates are given for periods and the text emphasizes moral and ethical teachings. At the end of chapters are Observations in which the chapter’s teachings are summarized. For example, at the end of chapter XVI, Gideon’s victory, Observations states “From these Biblical stories, dear children, we may learn that God is just, omnipresent and omniscient, merciful, kind, wise and mighty. He forsakes only those who forsake Him. He is easily found; He hears the cries of the suffering, and accepts the prayers of those who faithfully promise obedience, and who return to His ways. H e selects a leader suitable to the occasion, and overthrows mighty hosts even by a seemingly insignificant force. From Gideon also we may learn that we should be cautios and should satisfy ourselves as to the truth even of heavenly messages; that we should be modest, and yet expunge fearlessly the root of existing evils; that we shoud be careful in the selection of men for important undertakings; and should meet and appease just reproaches with patience and moderation. ‘A soft answer turneth away wrath, but grevious words stir up anger’” (Proverbs 15:1).
