Detailed
Description
Forty-eight discourses on the weekly Torah readings by R. Saul ben Joseph ha-Levi Morteira (c. 1596–1660). Born in VeniceR. Morteira, at the age of twenty, accompanied the Marrano Dr. Elijah Montalto, physician to the royal household, to Paris. When the latter died, Morteira brought his casket to Amsterdam to be buried, where R. Morteira remained. When the Sephardic community founded the Keter Torah Bet Medrash R. Morteira was appointed hakham. Among his students were R. Moses Zacuto and Baruch Spinoza, Morteira participating in the bet din that excommunicated the latter. Morteira delivered five-hundred sermons, of which these were selected by his students for publication. The title page is followed by a full page illustration of R. Morteira wearing tallit and tefillin, a half-title page, approbations, an introduction by R. Joseph ben Joel Shin who brought the book to press, and a detailed table of contents describing the homilies. At the end of the book, with its own title page, is a biography of R. Morteira. The discourses, organized by the weekly Torah readings, have a title, a header explaining the content and an introductory paragraph prior to the actual discourses which are set in a single column in square letters. The subject matter is diverse, philosophic, developing themes in the parashah, many intended to strengthen the faith of returnees to Judaism against Christian polemics.
