Isaac Dov Baer b. Gedaliah Chones (1840-1929) was born in Vilna and edu­cated in his youth by R. Zalman Zev, R. Bezalel Hacohen and R. Solomon Hacohen, all of Vilna. He later associ­ated with maskilim such as Samuel Joseph Fuenn, Zevi Hirsch Katzenellenbogen, Kalman Schulman and Abraham Dov Lebenson [Adam Hacohen]. He was employed as the proofreader for Fuenn's publishing house from 1862 until 1870, and after­wards for Romm until 1880. He immigrated to Chicago in 1891 and continued to work as a proofreader.
