Two independent works by the noted Russian writer and book collector Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rubakin (1862-1946). Nahal Demai are aggadot about Cossaks Al Miftan Yemei ha-Benaim is a historical tale set in the middle ages and translated into Hebrew by tr. Elkhanan Segal. He was also a prominent Russian bibliographer, developing a philosophy of books, reading and libraries. His personal library included 100 thousand volumes. He wrote fifteen thousand bibliographies, 280 books and brochures, and fifteen guides to self-education. Among his core principles were that books and people are inseparable. He loved books for their content not their covers. For him books represented people, the authors, and their readers. A library served as a bridge between authors and readers. His huge library served as a resource for his writings and for sharing with his community of friends and correspondents. Many people sought his advice when he lived in Russia as well as when he lived in exile in Switzerland. He wrote many books on science for the general reader. He developed a reading program for self-education as well as through correspondence.
