Description		    Only edition. [4], 84 ff. quarto 270:200 mm., extra wide margins, light age and damp staining. A very good copy bound in contemporary vellum over wood boards, rubbed, some splitting on edges.

Description		    Only edition of this talmudic lexicon by R. Hiyya Kohen de Lara. The author describes it as being "sayings, proverbs, moral reproof, decrees, regulations and principles from the Talmud, in alphabetical order, as well as corrections of printers' errors in the Talmud." R. de Lara included in his book various criticisms of the scholars of the south of France and of Germany. He apologized, however, if he thereby spoke disrespectfully against prominent rabbis. He was opposed to the method of pilpul in vogue among German rabbis of the time, pointing out: "What benefit do the German scholars bring by their hair-splitting distinctions? Has not the Talmud stated explicitly, that if we are so meticulous we should not be able to study" (Mishmerot Kehunnah, 11b). Mishmerot Kehunnah has an approbartion from R. Isaac Hayyim ibn Dana.

R. Hiyya Kohen De Lara (d. after 1753) was a rabbi and kabbalist. He was a pupil of the Moroccan rabbi R. Solomon Amar II and was one of the foremost group of scholars from the bet midrash Eẓ Ḥayyim in Amsterdam. In Peri Eẓ Ḥayyim (vol. 2, Amsterdam, 241), there are several responsa by R. de Lara dating from 1741. He complains about his difficult economic situation, describing himself as "embittered, busy with temporal cares and the cares of a livelihood, with difficulty providing for his needs, and troubled with other domestic cares." Of his works the kabbalistic Kanfei Yonah and Mirkevet ha-Mishneh are still extant in manuscript.

מפתח לענינים שונים בתלמוד. ערוך בסדר א"ב. דף [3,ב-4]: רשימת התורמים להדפסת הספר. לאחר ההדפסה, קודם שיצא הספר לשוק, נמתחה על המחבר ביקורת קשה, כגון על מה שכתב בדף יא,ב על שיטת הלימוד של "חכמי דרום" (צפון אפריקה?) ואשכנז: "מכאן מודעא רבא לחכמי דרום, אשר מכלים ימיהם לריק ... ולעיין דברי הבאי ושקר וכזב, מה הכריחו מה הכריחו לרש"י ז"ל לפרש כך ... גם מכרח שעושין על התוספות. ומה גם לחכמי אשכנז שעושין חילוקים". המחבר הדפיס התנצלותו בעמוד שמעבר לשער. בהתנצלות תשעה סעיפים, בנושאים שונים. בין השאר הוא מתנצל "שלא הראתי למעלת החכם השלם מקהלתינו ק"ק ספרדי' ... כל חבורי ... [רק] מקצתו, כנזכר בהסכמתו". "התנצלות המחבר" זו נדפסה גם בנפרד, בדף בודד.
