Detailed
Description
Letter by R. Abraham Jacob ben Tordos Zundel Hurwitz of Probozina (1864-1942 ) av bet din Brody, Bosk, and lastly in Probozina, near Tarnopol in Galicia. He was descended from the Shelah ha-Kodesh on his father’s side, and from Tordos Zundel, one of the leading sages of Brod, and R. Ezekiel Landau (Nodeh be-Yehudah), on his mother’s side. He was recognized as a prodigy at and early age and learned by many of the leading rabbis of the time, including R. Solomon Kluger. R. Hurwitz married the daughter of R. Mordecai Aryeh Shalit of Sassov, who promised, as part of the dowry, to support R. Hurwitz in his learning. However his father-in-law died prematurely, prior to the wedding. Nevertheless, his mother-in-law fulfilled all that had been agreed to, allowing him to devote time to his learning. R. Hurwitz learned day and night, sleeping four hours only a day. His novellae and halakhic expertise became widely known, so that he soon was corresponding with the leading rabbis of the time, all of whom praised him highly. He served for a considerable period of time in Probozina, renowned for his scholarship, learning, highly regarded and praised by all. R. Hurwitz was murdered in the holocaust.
