English language Haggadah issued by the North-West Peleg of Habonim that follows the basic outline of the traditional Haggadah but replaces the text with modern (1944) outlook and concepts. For example, it begins with Kiddush, stating “I lift this glass of wine, pressed from the fruits of Jewish labor, by free men, on the soil of Eretz Israel. May all of us, this day, while drinking, dink deeply of the wine of freedom.” Further on (p. 3) it says “At one time we were all Simpletons; but some of us began to think, and, lo and behold – it happened like this: - And it came to pass in the days of our forefathers that there were founded G’dudim in London, in the Peleg of the North-West: and they flourished . . .” continuing about those who were not sensitive to the trouble of the Jews in Europe and had written in their heart “Oh, to be in England,” then referring to the Blitz and the subsequent history of these Jews in England. It states (p. 8) “Now let us sing the praises and glories of the Lord, Who brought us to our homeland from the PLAGUES that are abroad. We may still be illegals, but we shall not be ignored in ERETZ ISRAEL.” The song Had Gadya begins “One Jewish kid, One Jewish kid, whose father was in the gown business.” Certainly an unusual and interesting Haggadah. The text is accompanied by numerous sketches.
There is an accompanying letter, from the Rev. M. Spira, who is sending the Haggadah, which he describes as of interest and informs that it was recited on Sunday evening in the synagogue hall by 100 youths, ages 16-2?.
