Rare first edition of Ueber den Keltismus und die Keltenspreche from the perspective of history by John Frederick Hirt (Hirth, 1719-1783) a German Protestant theologian and orientalist. Hirt was the son of John Jacob Hirt, a craftsman. He had already, in early childhood, demonstrated exceptional skills, so that he attended grammar school in Weimart and acquired the skills to study, from 1738 the Studium at the Universität Jena. In 1742 Hirt left the University on a literary journey, but came back there again 1744 and acquired the qualifications to hold lectures. In 1747, he graduated with the academic degree of Magister and was made, in the same year, adjunct at the Faculty of Arts. 1748 he became Konrektor in the Weimar Gymnasium and in 1758 was extraordinary professor in the University of Jena. After becoming a doctor of theology in 1761 Hirt was the Superintendent, Upper pastor and Saxony-Weimarischen Konsistorialrat and from 1769 a professor at the theological faculty. From 1775 Hirt was appointed first Professor of Theology Faculty in Wittenberg and served as pastor at the Upper Wittenberg Church, General Superintendent of the Saxon Kurkreises and assessors at Wittenberg consistory, manging these offices until his death in 1783 death. In his writings Hirt addressed the exegesis of the Old Testament, the Hebrew grammar and Ancient World and other Semitic languages.
