Description		    Only edition of this bi-lingual Hebrew Judeo-German history of the Jews from the time of Creation through the period of Judah ha-Maccabee by David ben Joseph Samostz (Samosc, 1789-1864). The title page informs that Nahar me-Eden includes tales of the events and occurrences that have befallen the Jews from the day that the Lord created the world until the days of Judah ha-Maccabee (3621) together with questions, ethical lessons, and brief verse at the end of each section. There is also a quote from Pope’s Essay on Criticism in English and German, which states “Whoever thinks a faultless piece to see, Thinks what never was, nor is, nor e’er shall be.” There is a versified dedication to Moses Poppenheim, a forward in Yiddish, a two page two column list of contributors who made publication possible, an introduction, and the text. Nahar me-Eden is comprised of forty-seven chapters in facing vocalized Hebrew and Yiddish. Each chapter, as promised on the title page, is comprised of the chapter contents in a clear and lucid style, concluding with questions, ethical conclusions and interpretations. At the end of the book is a riddle, addenda, and errata.
