Detailed
Description
Grammar and poetry by R. Simon Calimani (Simhah; 1699–1784), Italian grammarian, playwright, and poet. Born in Venice, R. Calimani served for many years as a rabbi in his native town. He translated Pirkei Avot ("Ethics of the Fathers") into Italian and wrote a concise Hebrew grammar and an unpublished and incomplete Hebrew-Italian dictionary. He also composed Tokhahat Megullah, an anti-kabbalistic polemic, various poems (one on the occasion of R. M. H. Luzzatto's wedding), and riddles and lamentations, most of which are still in manuscript. R. Calimani's most important works are his dramas: a three-act allegorical play (1734) written for a musical score, and two wedding cantatas (1737 and 1760) - all entitled Kol Simhah ("The Voice of Joy").
