I privilegi di Livorno son chiari, che proibiscono di poter ricevere contro la volonta de i genitori i figlioli di diversa religione che volessero professare la re1igione cattolica prima dell/eta' di tredici anni compiti ... [Legal opinion continuing the validity of the long standing privilege accorded by the Granduchy of Toscana to the Jews of Livorno, forbidding to convert their children to Christianity without parental permission until they have reached the age of thirteen].
Moving from the legal case of the Orvieto, a Jewish family of Livorno whose daughter, willing to embrace Christianity, was returned to their parents because she was still under age (October 17, 1739), Pompeo Neri, a Christian lawyer enthusiastically justifies the privileges accorded to the Nazione Ebrea of Livorno, forbidding the baptism of Jewish children against the will of their parents. Neri brings in support of his arguments the antecedents of the Venetian States and the Austrian Empire ("the legitimate age for the conversion of Jewish children is 14 years"), France ("12 years"; July 15, 1728) and the States of the Church (ordinances signed by the popes Martinus V, Paul V and Julius III). |
