The director of the Talmud-Torah school in Prague advises parents to send their children regularly to school. If children miss classes three times without an offical excuse they will be excluded from the school. He especially emphasizes that the school does not only teach the various disciplines but intends to educate a new awareness for Jewishness. However, education will only be successful if parents set an example. He strongly encourages parents to promote Jewish ideals and not to contradict their teachings.
Talmud Torah schools used to be public free school for poor and orphaned boys, who were given an elementary education in Hebrew, the Scriptures (especially the Pentateuch), and the Talmud (Halakah), and are thus prepared for the Yeshivah. In the modern time they were also open for girls.
