Set of 20 stamps drawn by Arthur Szyk for the Republic of Liberia. Three Cent Stamp: Full sheet. Landing of First Colonists. The landing of the first emigrants from the "Nautilus", is shown in the background. These settlers had joined with 88 who had sailed in February 1820 on the frigate "Elizabeth". Both groups in January 1822 settled on Providence Island in the mouth of the Mesurado River. Soon after arrival at Cape Mesurado, this handful was joined by other who came on the USS "Alligator". |
