Description		    R. Alter Saul b. Israel Elimelech Pfeffer (1874-1936) was born near Cracow and studied in noted Galician academies. He immigrated to the United States in 1912 and was immediately accepted by the Bet ha-Midrash haGadol as rabbi, where he served until his passing. R. Pfeffer was a distinguished member of the Agudat Harabonim of the United States, a vice president of Ezrat Torah, and Chairman of the New York Board of Rabbis. He was a founding member of the Gedola Moazot Hatorah.

His erudite scholarship is evident in the works he authored. Avnei Zikaron (3 volumes, 1923-39) contains numerous responsa to the greatest rabbis of the generation in many complicated area of Halacha. Volume II contains 100 responsa addressed to rabbis all over the globe followed by addenda to volume I, index, and corrections.
