Description		    First edition of this monograph on the prohibition of reproductions of forms in the synagogue by R. Samuel Heller, Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Safed (1817-84). The title page describes Tahorot ha-Kodesh as a pesak din on the prohibition of representations of forms in the beit kenesset that R. Heller presented to leading rabbis of the time inquiring of them as to the practical halakhah. The title page has a representation of the R. Shimon bar Yohai and his son R. Eliezer. It is dated with the verse “All [the ends of the world] shall remember and turn to the Lord” (Psalms 22:28. The text begins with a brief she’elot beginning that individuals donated, in order to adorn the synagogue, the house of the Lord, mikdash me’at, of the Ari, an Aron with attractive pictures, their intent being for the sake of heaven. The craftsman went and made many types of forms of living things, that were more than one dimensional such as a lion, eagle, and other creatures, in full form, their heads, bodies and wings, others with their faces and parts of the body. Many talmudei hakhamim complained, but others permitted it. R. Heller forbids it. In his response, the subject Tahorot ha-Kodesh, he explains in great detail, examining all the arguments for both sides, for his conclusion.
