Description		    Unusual edition of the Shulhan Arukh Orah Hayyim of R. Joseph Caro and R. Moses Isserles with the additional commentaries of Be’er ha-Golah by R. Moses Rivkes and Be’er Heitev by R. Isaiah ben Abraham. The title page mentions Be’er ha-Golah but does not give R. Rivkes’ name. Of greater interest is that the Be’er Heitev mentioned here is not the Be’er Heitev printed with all editions of the Shulhan Arukh today. This Be’er Heitev is by R. Isaiah ben Abraham (d. 1723), a rabbi and kabbalist, grandson of R. David ben Samuel ha-Levi. He wrote his Ba'er Heitev, a commentary on the Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim, which the title page describes as "a digest of the legal decisions of all the early and later halakhic authorities, and of all extant responsa." It contains many kabbalistic quotations, particularly from R. Isaac Luria, and achieved immediate acclaim, many editions appearing within a few years. In 1742, however, R. Judah Ashkenazi, dayyan of Tiktin, published a book serving the same purpose, with the same form and content and even the same name. Because the later book treated the material in greater detail, the earlier one lost its popularity, and whereas R. Ashkenazi's edition was published with the Shulhan Arukh, Isaiah's was forgotten. His work on the other sections of the Shulhan Arukh was never published. R. Isaiah, his wife, and his daughter met their death in an inn fire in Mogilev, on their way to Erez Israel.
