Detailed
Description
Flag for Simchat Torah by the Weigarten Press which operated in Jerusalem during the 1930's. The red side has on it an illustration of a crown for the Torah, underneath which is an illustration of a palm tree and an image that depicts the Holy Land. It is labelled "The Camp of Judah" and has on it quotes, such as Out of Zion comes Torah, and the word of Hashem from Jerusalem..

The other side shows a lion and a stag on either side of the Ten Commandments, which has the crown of Torah over it. The quotes are "Give honor to Torah" and Rejoice for Simchat Torah. Anoter quote says "its merchandise is better than all gold and precious pearls" (referring to the Torah).

Paragraph 2    On Simchat Torah all the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and marched around the temple seven times. Children march behind the Torahs waving flags, singing, and dancing. The tradition of children dancing with flag aloft, says Tel Aviv University historian Dr. Chaim Grossman, dates back to 17th century Ashkenaz, Eastern Europe’s pale of Jewish settlement. Unfortunately, he adds, no flags exist from that time, as these were made of delicate paper, then put in the hands of small children, and so were destroyed within hours. The Simchat Torah flag is one of those holiday items that isn’t written in any place - and likely were adopted from another culture - yet has become part of tradition.
