Paragraph 2    R. Gerstenfeld (1905-1968), a leader of Reform Judaism, was the Rabbi at the Washington Hebrew Congregation from 1939 until his death in 1968. He was a brilliant orator, and he also began the Amram Sunday Scholars Series. "R. Gerstenfeld's long rabbinate was marked by much controversy, especially over his vigorous opposition to Zionism, as well as by tremendous growth in the membership."

R. Gerstendfeld was noted for his efforts at interfaith cooperation. He was widely known for his radio sermon series "The Message of Israel" as well as " The Church of the Air". During his tenure at Washington Hebrew Congregation,R.
