Detailed
Description
Journal of the Orthodox community in Austrian Poland published in Levov. The issues here are from 1903 through 1910, although not all inclusive. The title page describes the journal as being the Organ fur das wahre Judenthum, that is, true Judaism. The first issue here, dated Friday 21 Av (1 August 1903) nr. 20, lists its contents as the kenesset ha-Gedolah, Beruchim ha-ba’im, me-al ramat zofim, with the help of the living God, and other subjects. The first article, dealing with an important assembly of rabbis in Cracow on Sunday of that week with forty attendees from several cities. It reports on the meetings for each day of the assembly. The second issue, March 1906, nr. 22, has as its lead article Israel, one nation, deals with political issues relating to Jews. An interesting facet of this journal, which has been described as representing Ultra-Orthodox Judaism, is that for a period it supported the Zionists party. In 1907, however, they withdrew that support and favored their traditional allies, the ruling Poles. From that year they issued warnings against opposing the government, a charge leveled at the Zionists for opposing the Polish club. Instead, Machsike Hadas, the party which Kol Machsike Hadas spoke for, urged the nomination of suitable Jewish candidates wherever there was a Jewish majority or plurality. Moreover, they informed their readers that where the choice was between Zionists and assimilationists they should vote for the latter, being the lesser of two evils.
